Engineer's Selection Guide: Strainers

Strainers remove solids from a pipeline to protect downstream instrumentation, pumps, and valves. Selection considers mesh/screen size, body type (Y-type, basket, temporary conical), pressure class, and clean-out convenience. A blow-off or drain connection eases maintenance.

• Protect control valves and meters with a Y-strainer sized for the line and a screen sized to the smallest downstream orifice; install a blow-off valve so the screen can be flushed without dismantling.
• During commissioning fit temporary conical strainers upstream of pumps and turbines to catch weld slag and construction debris; remove them before the line enters normal service.
