Electric
Electric actuators use a motor and gear train with limit and torque switches. They hold position without air supply, give fine modulating control and integrate easily with DCS/PLC. They are slower than pneumatic and need certified enclosures in explosive atmospheres.
Hydraulic
Hydraulic actuators supply very high thrust for large gate and ball valves where pneumatic or electric sizing becomes impractical. They need a hydraulic power unit and are common on pipeline and subsea valves.
Match Fail Action to Safety
Fail-open, fail-closed or fail-in-place is chosen from the process safety study, not convenience. A fuel-gas isolation valve typically fails closed; a cooling-water valve may fail open.
