GB vs API and ASME Valve Standards: Complete Cross-Reference Guide
Why a Cross-Reference Is Needed
Chinese manufacturers supply a large share of the world's industrial valves, and their catalogues cite GB and JB standards that most Western engineers have never had to read. The question that follows a quotation is always the same: is this valve equivalent to what my specification requires?
Usually the design standard is equivalent. Often the dimensions are not. This guide separates the two.
Design Standards Cross-Reference
| Scope | Chinese standard | International equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| Steel valves, general requirements | GB/T 12224 | ASME B16.34 |
| Face-to-face dimensions | GB/T 12221 | ASME B16.10, ISO 5752 |
| Valve marking | GB/T 12220 | MSS SP-25 |
| Bolted bonnet steel gate valves | GB/T 12234 | API 600, ISO 10434 |
| Compact steel gate valves | JB/T 7746 | API 602, ISO 15761 |
| Steel globe and lift check valves | GB/T 12235 | BS 1873, API 623 |
| Steel swing check valves | GB/T 12236 | BS 1868 |
| Steel ball valves | GB/T 12237 | API 608, ISO 17292, BS 5351 |
| Flanged and wafer butterfly valves | GB/T 12238 | API 609, EN 593, MSS SP-67 |
| Metal-seated butterfly valves | JB/T 8527 | MSS SP-68 |
| Pressure testing | GB/T 13927 | API 598, ISO 5208, EN 12266 |
| Inspection and testing | GB/T 26480 | API 598 |
| Nuclear valves | GB/T 19624 | ASME III, RCC-M |
| Valve model coding | GB/T 32808 | No direct equivalent |
The most important entry is the first gate valve row. GB/T 12234 is an equivalent adoption of API 600. Wall thickness, bonnet bolting, stem retention and trim requirements are aligned. A supplier claiming "GB/T 12234 compliant" is claiming API 600 design practice, and that claim is verifiable against the same criteria.
Flange and Dimensional Standards
| Scope | Chinese standard | Follows the geometry of |
|---|---|---|
| Steel pipe flanges (metric) | GB/T 9113 | EN 1092-1 |
| Large diameter flanges | GB/T 13402 | ASME B16.47 |
| Petrochemical flanges | HG/T 20592 series | EN 1092-1 |
| Petrochemical flanges (Class series) | HG/T 20615 series | ASME B16.5 |
This is where projects go wrong. A Chinese valve can be fully API 600 equivalent in design and still not bolt onto your pipe, because the metric flange series follows European geometry.
At DN100, GB/T 9113 PN16 gives a 220 mm outside diameter on a 180 mm bolt circle. ASME B16.5 Class 150 gives 228.6 mm on a 190.5 mm bolt circle. The design standard is irrelevant if the bolt holes do not line up. Our PN vs ASME Class guide sets out the full dimensional comparison.
The practical fix is straightforward: specify the flange standard separately and explicitly in the purchase order. Chinese manufacturers routinely produce both HG/T 20615 (ASME geometry) and GB/T 9113 (EN geometry) lines. You have to say which one you want.
Material Grade Cross-Reference
| Form | ASTM / ASME | Chinese GB | EN | JIS |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon steel forging | A105 | 20 steel | P245GH (1.0352) | SFVC1 |
| Carbon steel casting | A216 WCB | WCB / ZG230-450 | GP240GH (1.0619) | SCPH2 |
| 304 stainless forging | A182 F304 | 06Cr19Ni10 | 1.4301 | SUS304 |
| 316 stainless forging | A182 F316 | 06Cr17Ni12Mo2 | 1.4401 | SUS316 |
| 304 stainless casting | A351 CF8 | ZG07Cr19Ni9 | 1.4308 | SCS13A |
| 316 stainless casting | A351 CF8M | ZG07Cr19Ni11Mo2 | 1.4408 | SCS14A |
| Cr-Mo alloy steel | A182 F5 | 1Cr5Mo | 1.7362 | SCPH32 |
These are the commonly cited equivalences, and they are close enough for most commercial service. They are not identical. Composition tolerance bands, permitted residual elements and impact test requirements differ between standards. For sour service under NACE MR0175, for cryogenic duty, or for any code-stamped application, require the actual mill certificate rather than relying on an equivalence table. See our petrochemical material selection guide for sour-service specifics.
Testing and Acceptance Differences
GB/T 13927 corresponds to API 598, but the two are not word-for-word identical. Points worth writing into the purchase order:
- Test duration requirements differ by size and valve type between the two documents.
- Allowable seat leakage for metal-seated valves is defined on different bases; do not assume a GB shell and seat test certificate satisfies an API 598 requirement without checking the numbers.
- High pressure gas seat test is optional in some GB pathways and mandatory in certain API applications.
If your specification says API 598, ask for testing to API 598 explicitly. Most competent Chinese manufacturers can and will do it. They will not do it by default if the order only cites GB.
For the underlying leakage class definitions, see our valve leakage classes reference.
A Four-Step Verification Routine
- Decode the model number to establish the claimed construction. Use our GB/T 32808 decoding guide.
- Map the design standard using the table above, and ask for the specific GB clause if the equivalence matters contractually.
- Verify the flange standard separately. Design equivalence does not imply dimensional interchangeability. This is the single most common failure point.
- Specify the test standard by name in the order, along with required certificates (material, pressure test, and third-party inspection if applicable).
Where This Leaves You
Chinese GB standards are, for mainstream valve types, technically aligned with API and ISO practice. The engineering risk is rarely in the design standard. It is in the interface details: flange geometry, test acceptance criteria, and material certification depth.
Specification data covering pressure class, body material, end connection type and standards compliance for products across ninety-plus manufacturer brands is catalogued in the ValveSpecs Pro database, which supports side-by-side comparison before a purchase decision.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is GB/T 12234 the same as API 600?
GB/T 12234 is an equivalent adoption of API 600 and ISO 10434 for bolted bonnet steel gate valves. Wall thickness, bonnet bolting, stem retention and trim requirements are aligned, so a compliant GB/T 12234 valve follows API 600 design practice.
Which Chinese standard corresponds to API 608 ball valves?
GB/T 12237 covers steel ball valves for petroleum, petrochemical and related industries, corresponding to API 608, ISO 17292 and BS 5351.
Can I bolt a Chinese GB/T 9113 flange to ASME B16.5 piping?
No. GB/T 9113 metric flanges follow EN 1092-1 geometry. At DN100 the bolt circle is 180 mm against 190.5 mm for ASME B16.5 Class 150, so the holes do not align. Specify HG/T 20615 if you need ASME flange geometry from a Chinese supplier.
What is the Chinese equivalent of ASTM A105?
Chinese 20 steel is the commonly cited equivalent of A105 carbon steel forging, alongside EN P245GH (1.0352) and JIS SFVC1. Composition tolerances differ slightly, so request the mill certificate for critical service.
Does a GB/T 13927 test certificate satisfy an API 598 requirement?
Not automatically. GB/T 13927 corresponds to API 598 but test durations and metal seat leakage acceptance criteria are defined differently. If the specification requires API 598, state that explicitly in the purchase order.
Which Chinese standard covers valve face-to-face dimensions?
GB/T 12221 covers structural length for metal valves and corresponds to ASME B16.10 and ISO 5752.
